We always want to keep students motivated and enthusiastic about homework assignments because homework is an important way to keep students studying and engaged between lessons. Helpful scores and constructive feedback are a great way to do this!
Assessing a student's homework is a subjective process especially for writing assignments, so it is critical to explain the score and to review corrections made in the graded homework file during the lesson.
We recommend scoring homework based on a combination of completion and accuracy, taking effort into consideration. This means weighing the score closer to 100 if the student did the homework, and then deducting points based on the quantity of errors in the submitted homework.
If you are familiar with the US grading system, the lowest F grade is used for scores up to 59%. So if your student submitted any homework at all, we recommend 60% as the lowest score to give them.
| Letter Grade | Percentage | Grade Point Average (GPA) (out of 4.0) |
|---|---|---|
| A | 90%–100% | 4.0 |
| B | 80%–89% | 3.0 |
| C | 70%–79% | 2.0 |
| D | 60%–69% | 1.0 |
| F | < 60% | 0.0 |
And while we don't want scores to be too low, it is also important not grade too high as doing so doesn't allow students to see their scores increase as their writing improves.
